Ramon

The puma territory they’d named Lion’s Den was the opposite of the bears’ run-down settlement. The residents were healthy and friendly, excited for our visit, especially Haven’s. They’d never seen a tiger shifter and made a big deal out of his six-foot four-inch height, striking green eyes, and the tanned tone that reminded me of enticingly sunny destinations and erotically steamy nights.

We settled in and met with the leaders, feeling each other out but finally agreeing to an exchange program which would supposedly benefit both territories. This territory was wealthy, with several communication towers they’d built themselves and lots of high-end equipment. They transferred information from Portland to the rest of Costa Larga involving everything from new laws to new music, charging a subscription fee. Information was always at a premium since so much of the population had died out in the virus.

They’d also invested in a variety of much-needed imported and domestic goods, as well as a small fleet of ships to carry supplies up and down the coast, with a shipping and distribution office based in Portland.

As the sun threatened to finally set, Haven and I made plans to meet with them again the next morning. I couldn’t wait to jump into bed with my brilliant diplomat of a tiger, hoping some exchanging of a different sort could be accomplished in the privacy of one of our rooms.

Before we left the conference room, the alpha announced a bonfire and feast had been arranged in our honor. My plans crashed and burned. We had to attend.

Haven and I sat together at an outdoor table surrounded by the higher-ups of the clan. The roasted venison was delicious, but when the conversation turned to politics and grew heated, I excused myself, needing a break from the snooty glares of the wealthy, class-conscious pumas.

My reputation as a mechanic saved me as I was approached by several males who worked in their large garage. We chatted about vehicles and racing and I began to relax in their company.

I turned to see Haven on a log in front of the fire, a drink in his hand. I thought about joining him but stopped when a beautiful male who’d introduced himself earlier as Lonny positioned his lithe body on the log next to Haven.

“You’re on your trek?” His eyes shined amber bright in the light of the bonfire and his shy smile must have plucked many a dominant male’s strings.

“Yes.” Haven smiled his perfect smile and I wanted to punch someone.

“Where have you been so far?”

“Raventree. The bear territory near Carson. A couple of smaller towns. We’ve spent most of our time on the high-country trails.”

Lonny and Haven spoke a bit about what awaited us if we traveled north from here. Apparently, Lonny was an avid hiker.

Perfect.

Lonny glanced around, then turned back to Haven, scooting closer. “You’ve been traveling with the bobcat?”

“We’re making good time together. I’m fine on my own, but Ramon’s good company.”

“Ramon?” He had the nerve to laugh at my name. What the fuck was wrong with Ramon? And he was still talking.
